Jamie, it is text files that do not always retain formatting. Rtf files retain formatting including fonts, bold text, and page breaks. Page breaks are required for book submissions, and books will be rejected if they do not contain page breaks. If you convert a text file into rtf, you will not automatically have page breaks in that file. In fact, programs like Notepad strip out page breaks from text files. That is why use of text files is strongly discouraged. You can, as others have pointed out, convert your text file to rtf and manually insert page breaks. This is a slow. time-consuming process and can only work if the text file has page numbers in it to show you where to put the page break. For your friend with the books in ark format, the best strategy for getting them approved quickly is to convert them to rtf files and submit them that way. Relatively few volunteers can open ark files, and that is the reason I'm suggesting converting them to rtf. Your friend can submit ark files to Bookshare if she prefers. However, she would have to wait much longer to get her books approved. Almost every volunteer can open an rtf file, and that means more people have the ability to work on her books.
