dEVORAH, I was the one who started the thread; my question was when the scanning program (in my case Kurzweil) is unable to decipher the material that is in italics, what can we do to make the braille reader aware that the material was in italics and how much does our having to type it in detract for the sighted reader. On top of that, of course, I personally don't know how Bookshare translation handles this even if we try to create a braille italics. I, like you, don't change anything as long as my scanning program can read it orally. And now Evan is saying that the publisher quality BRF books Jilldon't do it either. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Devorah Greenstein" <DGreenstein@xxxxxxx>

I just came back to the list and I missed the beginning of this conversation. I always retain italics. Is it fruitless to retain them? Is this what I'm hearing? What about words that are in bold type? Sorry if I missed the answer. I can't think offhand of all the used to which italics are used--Ithinkthose are the main ones. Sometimes newspaper articles within a storyaregiven in italics, but I don't think that's essential; it wouldprobably bejust as clear to a sighted reader if it were indented and in quotationmarks. I assume when I validate that Jaws or Daisy or whatever is audio--Istilldon't have the various technologies straight in my mind, though it wasexplained once--emphasizes the italics in speech, or somehow reads it differently, though you just said that JAWS didn't, so I must beconfused. And I thought someone posted that braille differentiates italics, butthat wasn't your question. smile G.Cindy ***WISH LIST (CALLED REQUESTED ADDITIONS TO THE BOOKSHARECOLLECTION)ISAVAILABLE AT http://people.delphiforums.com/jamiecalton/Book_Requests.htm http://www.friendsofbookshare.org/ http://studentpages.alma.edu/~07jmyate/book_requests.htm A LIST OF BOOKS CURRENTLY BEING SCANNED IS AVAILABLE AT http://people.delphiforums.com/jamiecalton/scanning.html http://www.friendsofbookshare.org/ Jake's site for useful links: http://www.jbrownell.com/bkslinks.html --- On Sat, 7/5/08, Jill O'Connell <jillocon@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote:From: Jill O'Connell <jillocon@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: italics To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Saturday, July 5, 2008, 10:29 PM Thank you but that's not the problem or the question. I have sighted help and have copied the sentence. My question is, this is going to make a real change in the print copy so the sighted reader (dyslexic etc.) will miss the way it looks in the book entirely. This is why I am asking how others are dealing with this issue. But thanks again for your offer. You know I won't hesitate to ask you for help when I need it; you are always so generous.
