Hi, Lissi. Hmm. I suppose that compared to people who use an
opticon to check print quality, I must look like a slob. I'm not,
but I am a very practical person who looks at things in terms of
return on investment both in time and money. I think that, as a
validater, my goal is somewhat different than yours. My goal is to
get as many well-scanned books as possible into the collection. I
don't ask myself if the book is as good as it could possibly be. I
ask myself if the information in the book is completely legible
throughout the file and if there is anything that makes the file
structurally unsound. I am sure that my assessment of a book's
condition would change if I had access to a Braille device because
I'd be getting better feedback on things like extra line breaks. For
now, I use speech with JAWS and Word, and they serve me pretty
well. (smile) My validations are almost always rated as excellent
by the Bookshare tools, and I don't leave books in fair or good
condition when I get them. I often ask myself to weigh whether a
book could be more useful if I continued to refine it. If the answer
is no, then I upload it. If the answer is yes, I keep working on
it. To me, the memory of having to beg someone to read to me is too
fresh to ignore, and that is what drives my desire to build a high
volume and wide range of books in the collection. For the sake of
clarity, I don't like to see a lot of fair quality books in the
collection either. When I'm talking about building a big collection,
I mean a big collection of books rated excellent. I hope this makes
sense and explains why I validate as I do.
