My understanding is that they can withdraw PQ books, or ask the publisher to withdraw them, but they can't fix them.

No, I don't believe they are able to fix PQ books!

Are they able to fix publisher submitted books though? I remember reporting a quality issue for one and I was told they couldn't. But maybe it was because it was because of a different problem.

Rik;

Any book missing chapter navigation I would write a book quality report. They can’t fix what they don’t know is broken...

HTH!

Thanks everyone for this discussion.
I’ll just take my chances, and try to scan a book that seems less than likely to be made available from publishers, is sort of my take.
Pretty amazing numbers, as to the new additions to Bookshare.
I have been finding lots to read among them, that is for sure.

I do have one question.
I wonder if anyone else notices this.
That the navigation on many of these new books may not have the headings.
In Daisy, we have 3 levels of navigation in addition to page navigation.
My experience is that many new books only have page navigation.
If in any of the levels 1, 2 or 3 levels of navigation, if you hit the command to go to the next navigation heading you just hear “end of book” and poof you are done.
Meaning pretty much to navigate by page or by percent.
That is fine.
But I really like books best when I can do like any other sighted reader who wants to go by chapter or sub-heading, as well as by pages.

I know we can do the feedback on any given book, and I will try to do that.
But this comment is just for a general comment on the matter.

Just my 2 cents.
I don’t know what all is involved in the process.
But if anything can be done to make those new books have the levels of navigation described above, I vote YES!
Thanks!

Hi all,

Roger makes an excellent point. Additionally, we on staff never know which books publishers will give us or when we’ll get them. We’re as surprised as everyone else!

Best,

Madeleine

Cindy, I don't think you had better expect that anyone will let you know what has come in from the publishers. I just now checked the newly added books list and in the last twenty-four hours 3,415 books have been added. That kind of shows you how useful a books being scanned list will be now, but if it is actually no extra trouble for you then go ahead.

Then if someone wants to proof it I'll contact the scanner off list if it's someone whose email addie I already have; otherwise, the would-be proofer can post on the list that he/she would like to proof such-and-such a book. Nothing is more frustrating than working on a book and then find out it's been already scanned or proofed (nay more than frustrati ng ... anger-producing; this will take very little time on my part; it won't take time away from my proofing smile'

Hi Cindy and everyone,

We no longer keep a current “being scanned list” because of the volume of student requests that we get and publisher books that are added. While we love the idea of it, we unfortunately don’t have the bandwidth to keep a list like that current. It would actually change every few minutes and would need to be manually updated, so I’m sure you can imagine how difficult that would be!

I do encourage volunteers to post to this list when they’re about to scan a book, in case it can prevent duplicate scanning. However, keep in mind that many volunteers do not join this list or may not see the post in time. Still, I don’t think it can hurt to post what you’re going to scan.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Is this something I should revive, do you think? Originally I kept the list; I took the info from the the volunteer list and/or people wrote to me what they were scanning. Do you think it would be useful to have such a list so people would know what's being scanned and by whom so they could contact the scanner and ask to proof the book (and not waste time scanning somethng that someone else is scanning?

Hi there, Bookshare friends & volunteers!

I am a few chapters into scanning a new book I purchased after it was recommended by a singer-songwriter I had just interviewed for my radio show.

The book is:

A Six String History of America

by Jay M. Pilzer

published in 2014

It is a history of the guitar in America. Written by a history
professor who also happens to be a guitar aficionado.

And if you know any musicians who are blind, you know we kind of get
obsessed about the instruments we like to try and play!

I have scanned and had numerous book submissions accepted into our
collection over the years.

But of late, things have gotten to where a few submissions have come in
just around when they are being entered in by the Staff from the
Publishers.

And this was even after I had dutifully checked the "in process" list
on the website.

I don't care about that too much.

I enjoyed the scanning and the reading, which is what I mostly do is
scan what I wish to read and figuring it adds to my enjoyment, the
pleasure of sharing it with other eligible Bookshare members.

But I thought this time I would try and check earlier, prior to getting
all that close to being ready to submit.

And I was trying to find the Books Being Scanned List.

The page to which I was directed is dated November, 2013.

Maybe I somehow got lost in my own navigation. Stranger things have
happened to me!

So, there you go.

My Scan of a new book in Process. And my report of what I found in the
Bookshare Books Being Scanned page.

Thanks, all.

Oh, if someone emails me directly, and wishes to Proofread this book,
send me an email or reply to the Discussion.
