At this point, I just have to make a comment. Mobipocket is an ebook program
that runs on a
pda, the kind of device (for sighted people) that the braillenote and the like
are intended to
perform the same functions for blind people. While many functions of a
"regular" pda would
be impossible for blind to use, a pda could easily be made to read ebooks
aloud. Sadly,
almost all commercial ebooks are prevented from being used this way on a pda or
computer.
I really don't know why the publishers would want to reduce their market this
way. I can only
guess that some paranoid fellow among them thought that if the book could be
read aloud,
someone could record that and distribute it everywhere without the publisher
getting any
payment. Ebooks themselves are extremely accessible and more books all the
time are
showing up as ebooks, but this sad situation of having read-aloud capability
disabled
continues.

On a happier note, Mobipocket and other ebook programs do allow the size of
text to be
changed making it easier for low vision people (yours truly included) to read
them (and I don't
have any proof, but I'm pretty sure there are now more books available as
ebooks than there
are large print paper books).
