Gail, I think what you're doing is really cool. (smile) I have an aunt who
can't read, and I'm interested in learning how to help her too. My aunt has
severe dyslexia. Do you know what's at the root of your friend's difficulty
with reading? It might really matter in how you approach teaching him. I'm
not an expert in this field. Like you, I'm an interested person who wants to
help. We do have some teachers on the list, and they might be willing to
point us in a good direction. I read in a book last year that people with
dyslexia sometimes benefit from using Braille and speech like blind people
do. I've also read that it helps them to visually track the letters as
speech reads to them in a program like Kurzweil or Wyn Wizard. Let me see
what I can find that's already on Bookshare. That'll help me know what kinds
of books I could try scanning.

Since you're still working on earning credits so you can access the
Bookshare collection, would you be comfortable telling me how much credit
you still need for your membership? You could do that privately if you like.
My email address is rhyami@xxxxxxxxx I'm asking because I've watched you
volunteering over the past few months. You work hard and seem to do it with
a smile. I'd like to help you get enough credits so you can use the full
Bookshare system as soon as possible. People like you earn my respect and
admiration because you're willing to do what it takes to win, to earn what
you want and need. I'm looking forward to getting to cheer for you when
you've earned your credits. (smile)
