Hi Jill, I'm not sure why you are reading your books in .txt format instead of .html, but I'm sure you have good reasons.
However, may I suggest textpad, a free text editor. (Well, it's an evaluation copy which you can use until you can afford it, and I think it's only $35.00 (but not sure of the price).
You'll have to work with it a bit, but if you need help you can contact me at rwiley@xxxxxxxxxxxxx and I'll try to help.
The great thing about it is that, if you use it's work space, you can put multiple markers in the file and come back to them whenever you wish. The work space also remembers where you were when you last closed it.

When I download a book as an HTML file and then save it as a text file in order to read it on my hard drive, I can't make the find command (control-F) work.
