Hi, E. I have noticed in scanning that a blanket template setting doesn't work for all books under one type such as Harlequin Romance. Template settings work for books in a series by the same author and publisher, though. Getting a good scan means being willing to use the Optimize feature in Kurzweil in the middle of the book when there are some stray bad pages after the first Optimization has been tried. Also, no matter how careful we are with settings, preparing our books, and cleaning the scanner, editing is the other key factor in making sure that garbage characters and scannos never make it to Bookshare. If people are not willing to experiment with settings on bad pages and are not willing to read the book and edit scannos, there will be bad scans. There is no substitute for time and hard work.

I notice a lot of the poor scans fall into distinct groups.

It might be possible to work out settings templates for these various groups.

We can provide these templates for people using, say, kurzweil.

Settings templates might include
Harlequin romance
Thorndike Press
Tor Books
Silhouette Romance

We can provide these templates for the less computer savvy among us though the optimize feature requires the user to only use one button. The fact that poor scans are being produced either means the submitter does not have access to software with such features or cannot use the software.

We also may want to train each other perhaps in the chat room in better use of software to produce scans.

We validators really love you folks who give us beautiful scans!!

E.
