Tracy, there is a tip on Jake's site about replacing potential problem characters such as the opening and closing quotes that gave you grief in this book.

http://www.jbrownell.com/bks/tip.asp?id=18

The tip there covers the opening and closing double quotes, but also contains instructions on looking for and replacing opening and closing single quotes, the special ellipsis character, and a note on making sure that MS Word does not replace the generic characters with it's so-called "smart" ones.

While it is true, as Ann says, that this is not likely to occur often, I do understand how you feel when something you did not know about and therefore were not prepared to even look for in order to correct it, comes out of nowhere to seemingly ruin all your hard work and waste your time. Believe me, from one perfectionist to another, I would feel just as frustrated as you feel now. Luckily for me, I scanned my first books with OpenBook 7, and noticed that the quotes in my scans looked odd on my Pac Mate's braille display; so I did some investigating and found out what was going on. I also found out that my version of MS Word would tell me that it has replaced the smart quotes with straight quotes, but if they were not turned off in the Autocorrect submenu, it put the smart quotes right back again. It was very frustrating at first, because I knew how to get rid of them in Word, but didn't at first know how to keep them gone.

To answer someone else's question here: K1000 does not use the opening and closing quotes, but OpenBook version 7 does insert them into scans. I do not know about version 8.

Don't lose your heart. This really won't be a problem with most books, and it does not take long to find and fix them now that you know how to do it.

OK, I did that.
But how the hell was I supposed to know I had to do that? What other
weird-ass thing is Daisy doing to the files I've submitted, thinking
they're as good as I can make them? Anything else Bookshare can do to
make me feel like all my valuable time is being totally wasted?
"Ha-ha! Every book you've validated is a complete mess!"

Thanks a million.

Hi Tracy,

The problem with smart quotes is that they appear as â characters in the
converted DAISY file which appears on Bookshare. This means that, in the
RTF file, they will still appear as smart quotes and not as â characters.
Smart quotes and generic double quotes differ only in their ASCII values
in terms of how a screen reader will announce them and output them to a
Braille display, so to replace them, you'll have to do a Find/Replace in
Word with ASCII values. The opening smart quote is ASCII 147, the closing
is ASCII 148, and the generic one is ASCII 34; to specify ASCII or ANSI
characters in the Find/Replace dialog, type a caret (^, SHIFT+6), followed
by the character code. So, first perform a Find/Replace, typing ^0147 in
the Find edit field and ^0034 in the Replace edit field, and Replace All;
then, perform another Find/Replace, this time typing ^0148 in the Find
field and again ^0034 in the Replace field. If that doesn't work for you,
omit the first zero after the carets in
all cases (i.e., the sequence in each edit field would then be a caret
followed by a three-digit number). This should replace the smart quotes
with normal ones.

Incidentally, and this is just an aside, though it relates, Word, by
default, is set to automatically replace normal quotes with smart quotes
when you type a quote (SHIFT+APOSTROPHE). If you want to disable this
specific replacement, go to Tools > AutoAutoCorrect Options in Word.
You'll land on the AutoCorrect tab, so CTRL+TAB once to land on the
AutoFormat As You Type tab You'll land in a list view of options. DOWN
ARROW once to land on the Straight Quotes with Smart Quotes check box.
Press SPACE to uncheck it, then ENTER to close the dialog/save changes.

HTH,
Maria

I can't even find any a circumflex in my rtf file. Either this Bob is
making it up, or editing in rtf is totally pointless, and I might as well
give up validating altogether, as I appear to be completely wasting my
time.
I have gotten a lot of pleasure from validating for Bookshare over the
last 3 or 4 years, whatever it is, but how the hell can I fix things I
can't even find?
First I spend a lot of time working on a book that was a duplicate
submission, and now these stupid smart quotes, whatever that is. I'm very
frustrated!!!!!!
