Hello.
The American Council of the blind has a special-interest affiliate
dedicated to blindness technology. Whether you're a tech enthusiast or
if you just have questions about it and need a bit of support and
guidance I encourage all of you to consider becoming a member of BITS,
which stands for Blindness Information Technology Specialists. Please
don't let the name put you off. Not all of us are I.T. specialists,
myself included. Anyone is welcome, whether you're a brand new owner of
a smartphone or a seasoned professional.
Here are some of the benefits you can receive as a member.
1. BITS has its own mailing list where members can ask questions or
share information regarding blindness assistive technology. This could
be about screen readers, digital book players, smartphones, etc.
2. BITS hosts weekly Saturday night chats. While many topics are
discussed during these chats this is another place where you can ask
that burning, nagging question and will likely have it answered. These
chats occur every Saturday at 8:00 PM and you can participate either by
calling into a phone number or via computer using the Zoom software.
3. BITS hosts various presentations where a member will demonstrate and
answer questions about a piece of software or some other type of
relevant technology. Members who are not able to listen in during the
presentation may download presentations at their convenience and can
listen to them on their device of choice.
Membership is $20.00. For more information, you can visit the BITS Web
site at this link.
