I have both an Echo and a Dot. I have a portable speaker/battery on the Dot to
make it totally portable. I use it for everything from music to podcasts to
games to news. There are over fifteen thousand skills and the number grows
every day. A skill is their version of an app. All skills are free although
some link to accounts which cost money. For example amazon Music Unlimited.
That costs money and is their version of Apple Music or Spotify. You can order
a pizza from Dominos or check your local forecast with Weathersky. There is a
ton of things you can do.
If you want to get into home automation, you can buy modules to have your Echo
start your coffee maker, control your lights, or even open your garage door if
you have a garage door.
I personally love the message and calling feature. I have a friend who I can
say “Wake Word” call send a message to “friend” and she says what do you want
to say. I simply voice my message and she sends it. Completely hands and hassle
free.
It also works great as an intercom for others in the house. I can message
people at the other end of the house and they can message me without picking up
a phone or taking my hands off of whatever I happen to be doing.
