Kim,
Yes, Python is the language they are using. I don't know of Python resources
off the top of my head but I'm sure that people on one of the NVDA lists would
be able to direct you to relevant resources. Joseph Lee is likely a good person
to contact. If I had more time and a more logical mind I might pursue learning
it but right now I don't feel I could take on such a project. Who knows. You
might be the person to write the Outlook message list option. <smile> I believe
there is also a separate list for NVDA developers. That would most definitely
be a good list to jump onto, at least to help you get your feet wet.
As a dedicated NVDA user I appreciate that you even are considering pursuing
such work.

Hello David,
Thanks for the info. I took several of your earlier suggestions and unchecked
the reading of headers and tables, rows and columns by NVDA and those changes
have helped a lot with the chatty problem I was seeing in outlook. I am still
planning to request the addon for filtering while in outlook and will keep you
posted regarding any progress or feedback.
I’m also interested in learning the language for coding used by the NvDA devs.
Is that Python? Do you have any resources for that or names of people I could
reach out to for additional information? I’ve been a programmer for over
thirty years and feel like I could put some of that experience to use
developing for NVDA.

Subject: [blind-philly-comp] ***UNCHECKED*** Re: Re: A few questions about NVDA
Hi, Kim.
NV Access uses a system called Github which they use to track the progress of
bug reports and feature requests. This allows users to file bug reports or
request features which go directly to the NVDA development team. The process
may seem a bit complex for first-time users but using a system like this allows
the developers to easily keep track of how many issues are opened, being
addressed or closed. Once you submit a feature request you can also receive
email updates if anybody comments on your ticket or if they have further
questions for you. It also notifies you when the status of your ticket changes,
such as if it gets assigned to someone to work on or once it has been closed.
This would be used more for internal features, rather than requesting an addon.
The URL for this is
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Fnvaccess%2Fnvda&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cf50bd1ad2e9447fd7f1508d6369d5fea%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636756446870347857&sdata=FsD4TDf31Cr6e1g45JmrmlJ85D0lJCUSMcqCp6iHAqM%3D&reserved=0>
First, choose the Sign Up link to create an account. Once you are signed in you
are able to file a ticket requesting a feature or to file a bug.
For requesting addons, there is a separate mailing list for the discussion of
NVDA addons. To subscribe, send an email to
nvda-addons+subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:nvda-addons+subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
I am currently not a member of this group. However, I think they allow users to
submit ideas for addons. This capability for altering the reporting of message
lists in Outlook is one which I think is important and so I wish you nothing
but success in trying to get others to recognize this.

I decided to check the official NVDA addons page but couldn't locate an addon
to filter or alter the Outlook message list. For the record, the URL for the
page is
https://addons.nvda-project.org/index.en.html<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Faddons.nvda-project.org%2Findex.en.html&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cf50bd1ad2e9447fd7f1508d6369d5fea%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636756446870347857&sdata=KdFLPFLwyxLZnuMzLa%2B41HVOqhiWo9XH7H1Oesgad20%3D&reserved=0>
There are some very nifty addons available here.

Kim,
Unlike JAWS, NVDA doesn't contain a host of settings to control the verbeage in
the Outlook message list. However, one thing you could try is to disable the
speaking of row and column headers, found within Document Settings. As a
shortcut, shift-control-D opens Document settings, or you could arrow to it
from Settings within the NVDA menu.
Once you're in Document settings, press alt-E once or twice and you should
eventually get to Row and Column Headers, which will likely be checked. Press
space to uncheck this, followed by enter to close the dialog. There won't be a
significant difference but you won't hear headers such as From, Subject, etc.
So, instead of hearing something like "From Kimberly Starrett, subject hello"
you'll hear
"Kimberly Starrett, hello."
What we really need is an addon or built-in set of commands where we can
customize which fields are spoken and which fields are to be ignored, along
with changing the order of these fields. JAWS allows for this internally. NVDA
may have an external addon for this on their addons page but, off the top of my
head, I don't recall if this exists. I believe an addon with these capabilities
exists for Thunderbird.

Hi David,
Yeah thanks, I think I’m okay. I got some notes from Jan and I found a NVDA
user group.
One thing I have been wondering about, sometimes NVDA seems a bit chatty and
pressing the control key for silence doesn’t have much effect. For example, in
outlook when I arrow down the list of messages I don’t necessarily need to hear
the entire line of information associated with each message. The problem is
NVDA just gets going and chatters away, giving me way more verbage than I need
or want. Is this a buffering issue or is there a setting I can tweak to make
NVDA read less?
Thanks,
Kim

I am back and am getting caught up with email. Are you good with accessing NVDA
settings? I assume so but, if not, please holler.

Hi David and all,
I’ve recently started using NVDA a lot more as Jaws has turned into a real dog

someone can answer.
How do I update my current version of NVDA?
How do I get to the NvDA settings screen?
Is there a user guide or tutorials anyone can recommend to give me the basics?
Thanks in advance,
