Kimberly,
I've briefly used the trial version of Eloquence and didn't notice
performance issues. However, I admit to not having used it extensively
and it's possible that, with prolonged use, I might encounter the same
issues you're experiencing. Code Factory actually sells two versions of
Eloquence. One of them is the link that I gave you, which is a version
which works with all screen readers in Windows in what is called a SAPI5
version. Again, that version, for me, performed reasonably well. The
other version is an addon, specifically designed for NVDA only, which
includes Eloquence and the Nuance Vocalizer voices, including Tom,
Samantha and the others you know from JAWS as well as from Apple
products. With that addon, Vocalizer performed well but Eloquence was
behaving more along the lines of what you're reporting and I was
unwilling to consider purchasing it until the Eloquence performance
improved.
The version of Eloquence which comes with JAWS is specifically locked or
tied to JAWS only, whereas the trial you were using is not locked to a
particular screen reader and is likely using different software to drive
the speech. Therefore, there are likely many differences, under the
hood, between Eloquence for JAWS and the version of Eloquence sold by
Code Factory. I honestly cannot understand why a fully licensed version
of Code Factory's software would function differently from the trial
version. This should not be the case. After all, the purpose of a free
trial is to have the opportunity to use the software to test drive it in
order to determine whether it's something you'd want to purchase. If the
trial version's performance is substandard, there should be no reason
for why you would want to purchase it. This was why I decided not to buy
the NVDA addon with Eloquence and Vocalizer speech, as I felt that the
performance from Eloquence was, to be frank, unacceptable.

Thanks David. I downloaded and installed the trial version of Eloquence and
have it working with NVDA on my windows 7 laptop. I don't know if you have any
familiarity with this configuration, but just as a point of comment eloquence
doesn't seem to operate quite as smoothly with NVDA as it does with Jaws. For
example, when doing a read all, it seems the reading is somewhat choppy with
occasional stops and starts. Additionally, if one opts for pitch change to
indicate caps while typing, the pitch change sounds rather screechy. Code
factory claims there is no difference between the trial and purchase versions
of the software, however I have seen a few posts on various lists that indicate
there are differences. Like the choppiness I described seems to disappear after
the license is purchased. So my question is two-fold. First, what could account
for the differences in performance of eloquence in NVDA and Jaws? And second,
why might performance improve after purchase, if indeed this is t
he case?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Kimberly

Hi, Kimberly.
There is no legally free version of the Eloquence synthesizer for NVDA.
However, Code Factory sells it for 59 euros, which, as of the time I'm writing
this, converts to $62.08. Here's the Web site for more information and
purchasing.

Hi, Kimberly.
Here's how to manually force NVDA to check for and download updates.
Press insert-N for the NVDA menu.
Arrow down to the Help submenu and press enter.
Arrow down to Check for Updates and press enter.
It should locate the update. Tab to Download and Install and press enter.
The next screen will ask if you'd like to dontate to NV Access. Of
course, you may do this but there is no obligation to do so, so you
can feel free to either choose to donate or not to donate.
At that point, the update should download and install.
If your user account control settings are set to warn you of system
changes, you will be asked to allow NVDA to make changes to your
way?
