Hello All,
I write this quickly, awake and reflecting in the middle of the night.
I dont know the exact number, but the group here at the Airport
Westin in San Francisco has exceeded all expectations in size. The
sessions Ive attended and the one I helped to present have all been
substantive and well attended (several have been sold out). A warm,
bonded, upbeat, attentive energy pervades this group. Its a
wonderful and strengthening experience to be among so many working
with, or interested in Systemic Constellations, especially here in the
otherwise lonely US. Dan Cohen, Carolyn Zahner, Barbara Eggenberger,
and Gary Stuart have really outdone themselves in organizing a
cohesive, well-run conference.
Moving now into Day Three, Hunter Beaumont has delivered two incisive,
heartfelt keynotes. In the first, he spoke of the profoundly
relational, context-dependent nature of meaning. A loaf of bread
handed to you just after you have stuffed yourself with a lavish
Thanksgiving dinner is either drab or downright disgusting. That same
loaf offered to the parent of famine-starved children means life
itself. How much more relational are then the events we perceive in
constellations?
But then, what meanings are true? What is the truth of
constellations? In his second keynote, Hunter posed the naïve
realists notion that genuine facts are simply out thereavailable
to and the same for everyone. This he contrasted with the radical
constructivists view that all our human experiences are built very
much internally, so that they remain fundamentally subjective
interpretations of what is otherwise unknowable. Somewhere in the
middle between these is perhaps the sanest place to be. And here in
the middle dwells also metaphorthe kind of truth that is neither
false nor directly factual, yet deep and instructive. The truth of
constellations is very often in this area.
Over the first of two very nice lunches, Gordon Wheeler, president of
Eselan, told us of connections between Gestalt and constellations, and
of the early constellations that helped chart the course of this
famous, Big Sur human potential institute. And then Malidoma Some
invoked the meaning of ancesters with a learned, yet poignant
simplicity that brought some to tears. The image of indigenous
grandchildren singing a tribal song while running towards a happy,
tumbling collision with their grandparents will stay with me forever.
There is so much we in the first world have lost.
This afternoon, Francesca Mason Boring, our Shoshone grandmother,
along with Malidoma, led is in a type of community constellation of
the deeper realities of the United States of America. We walked to
the steadying beat of a West African drum among chairs labeled with
various strengths and tragic failures of this wide land. And then the
talking feather was passed, and a couple hundred participants shared
how this had affected them.
So all is rich, and steady, and meaningful here so far. I can think
of only one echo of sadness. Over dinner in the hotel restaurant, I
and a new friend sat near two other Native American elders that have
graced this conference with their presence. Glancing their way as our
food was ordered and served, I slowly realized that, each time I
looked, they sat with a table empty but for their menus. As the
grandmother got up and walked by, it hit me that perhaps (Im not
sure) they were being ignored while we were being served. When she
returned and sat down, I approached and asked her if everything was
ok. She actually just smiled. I went and spoke to the waiters.
Perhaps I misinterpreted this event. As Hunter says, we need to stay
loose about truth. But the metaphor is there. Two Asian waiters
serving whites promptly while the original people of this land sit
with an empty table. There is so much healing needed in this world of
ours.
And on a lighter note, if you want the full buffet breakfast (as
opposed to the continental that comes with the conference), you pay a
little extra. When you get your receipt, it reads "Systemic Upgrade--
$10.00 ." So, I've already gotten two of these and am feeling so much
better. :-)
