I think I would have handled it much like you, with one (perhaps semantic)
exception.
To me, it's not "bringing him out of this state" so much as bringing him into
the picture, which you did. You said he was twisted away from seeing and
therein was the problem. Your solution of acknowledging and agreeing to all was
the way I would have approached it too. Did you also have the birth and
adoptive parents acknowledge their individual responsibility in the situation
and acknowledge one another as well? This feels like an important healing step.
I am interested in hearing others answers as well.
