Thanks, your points are well taken AND after 8 grueling years of a (not so)
hidden dictator. Americans are battle weary. Most people have been listened
to and acknowledged as participants in the experiment known as America (at
this moment). I can honestly say that my black friends are elated to feel
equal at every level. I am a child of the 60's America and lived through a
lot of racial history so this day is quite special for a lot of us AND we
have no illusions of the reality either. Thanks for your great insights.

Gary,
For me every day is a new dream, and a gift. Jan 20/09 is no different
from every day before it, or every day after it, for me.
The media spectacle and sappy rhetoric of Baback-o-Rama does not speak to
me.
MLK said that he dreamed of a day where a man would not be judged by
the colour of his skin. Obama's ancestors are also Caucasian, yet the
media hoopla acknowledges his black ancestors mostly; only that which
is visible to the physical eye. As a half Caucasian and half South
Asian person, I can tell you my systemic loyalties are complex. Once
people know me personally and therefore my ancestry, I wish they would
also see the Dane in me and not just my brown skin. It does not work
when half of me (my ancestors) is excluded. I'll bet I'm not alone in
this feeling.
Notwithstanding that he is articulate and well read, Obama is not the
Father. And your adulation frightens me. It's like he is a logo for a
brand, with rah-rah obsession focused on frenzied brand loyalty, and
not substance. The ubiquitous media clips remind me of Leni
Riefenstahl's film about the rally in Nuremberg in 1934 or the
exultation of the Ayatollah's supporters in 1979 in Tehran. Any
beginner Media Studies student will identify these techniques of
promotion and persuasion as the building blocks of propaganda in order
to manufacture consent.
Deep in my bones, I feel frightened when I see the media circus and
people creating and worshiping an idol, albeit a black one this time.
Many of my acquaintances are rather giddy about the inauguration, and
I surmise that it will be painful when they have to come down from
that state. I see my work as that of trying to reduce pain in the
world, not just maneuver the orders of love after the harm is done.
The Big Dream is within me. An external Messiah is not what I have
been waiting for, neither Obama nor Hellinger.
