Thank you all, this is helpful.
The backstory is that on the clients father's side, his father shot his mother
and the killed himself when dad was about 17 years old.
Thanks again for your input.

Subject: Re: [ConstellationTalk] I have a potential client suffering from
schizophrenia. This would be a first time for me
There are lots of angles on this question. On just the angle of “should
we?” I appreciate Linda’s answer very much. Most change work - and family
constellations is a type of change work - move toward healing by de-stabilizing
the present situation. Anyone who is actively struggling with maintaining “the
senior I” probably shouldn’t do constellation work directly, and so Linda’s
questions seem perfect to me. That’s different than for doing one for someone
who has schizophrenia who isn’t present (say, a parent doing it on a child's
behalf), or someone, like Linda’s, who has adequate stability (and I love how
Linda asked what she should do if that should change). As a non-clinician, I
try to be careful about the mental state of clients.
I have worked with a few instances of schizophrenia, and I have not found it to
be connected to one kind of family trauma. In at least one case, it was not
murder, but rather a loss of such size and intensity that it led to
fragmentation and disassociation. So, I personally suspect the systemic
etiology of schizophrenia may be varied, but I admit my sample set is small.

Hi, Jack,
In my experiences with schizophrenia in constellations, there was a strong
split(s) (schizophrenia is defined as a “splitting of the mind”) of some kind
in the family field/ancestry and within the person h/herself. I once
represented someone with schizophrenia and there were choices that had to be
made (what seemed like life and death, trauma) in a previous generation. The
split was about being torn between living the country of origin and moving to
the new country. It was heartbreaking and felt as such. Once that split was
acknowledged by other family members in the constellation there was some peace
for ‘me.’ The feeling of being adrift and never feeling grounded in the family
but content to be that way was strong - that was ‘my' role. There was also a
deep sense of wisdom and thoughts that ’they wouldn’t understand anyway.’ It
seemed as if ‘I’ was carrying the load of the important split that had
happened. ‘I' was carrying it because I agreed to so that others in ‘my’ family
wouldn’t have to.
I think it is important to note that only 1% of the population is affected by a
diagnosis of schizophrenia. Working slowly and gently, acknowledging their
reality, and trying not to fix is key I believe as well as considering the
spiritual awakening piece. Here are a couple of articles about that:
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-empowerment-diary/201507/is-it-psychosis-or-spiritual-emergency
and https://www.mentalhealthforum.net/forum/thread5689.html.
My other experience was with paranoid schizophrenia. The mother of my boyfriend
in college was diagnosed with it. I learned a lot from my boyfriend and how he
cared for her and also how frustrating it could be for the family system as
when she went off her medication she could be very angry, confused, and with
conviction believed everyone was out to get her. Back then I didn’t know about
family constellations and I wish I could remember more about my experiences
with her (it was about 28 years ago). I do remember the compassion, kindness,
and acceptance the family showed her and how patience was important.
I hope some of this helped. It was an enlightening experience to represent
someone with schizophrenia and schizophrenia itself.
