I take it as a metaphor. I know it has a history, it was created by
Albrecht Mahr. It opens up some understandings but if we take it too
literally, it closes off others.
Some good aspects of the metaphor are that it brings up connections to
agricultural fields (something you can cultivate, something with
unseen/underground parts). It also brings up connections to the fields
where sports are played. So it can be a very grounding metaphor.
