dear jo,
yes, as a measure that is fine, and used in lots of research, but the difficulty is, on what would we use the measure? often the issue the client brings to the constellation is not the issue that unfolds in the constellation as the 'real' issue or 'soul' issue - eg they might say the problem is their daughter's anger and we find out in the constellation that the problem is an entanglement with father's mother for example. so would we use the measure on the orignial problem, or would we measure more nebulous things like quality of life in general afterwards, or relationships within the family, or other things.
sud by itself may also not be enough, if we were using scales we could use other quality of life measures of which a number abound, and the psychologists present would be more au fait than me about them.
but i agree with you in principle that a measure that can be applied universally is necessary for research purposes.
love
sarah

Greetings and Blessings!

I'd like to table as a suggestion, a possible means of more accurately tracking and recording the unfoldment of the after-effects of a constellation.  A mechanism already in use for other modalities, is called by the unweldy name of SUDS: Subjective Units of Distress (you could call it anything).  I use it with my clients for determining how much 'charge' they have over an issue during sessions using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Clients make a before and after reading which makes progress obvious.

For those who don't know how it works:  People rate from 0-10 how disturbed they are by contemplating now, the issue being worked with and comparing the feeling to everytime they have experienced that same feeling in their lives.  Zero is being at peace about it and 10 being the most disturbed.  Sometimes this approach wouldn't be appropriate for constellations eg the person may have had a generalised feeling of not belonging all their lives. Although, in this case it could be possible to get them to rate this disturbance to all the emotional pain they have ever felt in their lives.

We use the low scale 0-10 because EFT usually normalises the problem in a few minutes.  Because constellations onfold for two years or more, I believe it would be better to use a scale of 0-100, as this makes it easier for the maths as well - (0-50 could work, but a bit more cumbersome for math).

It would mean that facilitators would need to check in with the client either between them naming their issue and before the constellation starts or at the end of the constellation (having then to rely on their albeit recent memory).  The latter risks bringing the person 'down'.  The question would need to be recorded so the same one was asked in 6/12 months' time.

Obviously this idea needs plenty of development if any good at all........  What are others' thoughts about it?

Blessings.  Jo
