Hi everyone,
Since many of you are hosting in person events, and since I retired from
Emergency Medicine after 40+ years, I thought that some of this might be
relevant and useful.
1) https://www.worldometers.info/This website updates statistics daily
Flu, corona, how many births, deaths, deforestation, days before end of oil
reserves, etc.Great stuff for anyone interested in ongoing and collective themes
2) Huge differences between Spanish Flu - which killed more people (50-100
million worldwide) during the years of WW I than combat deaths those years -
and coronavirus.
Almost no deaths in people under 50 from coronavirus, and those that do, take
days to deteriorate.
Spanish Flu mostly killed younger healthy people because of overactive immune
response in the lungs. It was not unusual for people to get ill at night, and
be dead by morning.
Very different from coronavirus.
The present flu has something like 0.4% mortality, but it really depends on
underlying level of health.
3) If you look at the statistics, you see that there are almost NO deaths in
children from coronavirus.
My pediatric ER colleagues have noticed this, as well.
good news, and, the bad news is that some children with corona just appear to
have colds. That is not so good for the grandparents who hug them.
Also, viral spread is high EARLY in the course of corona, so people are often
quite infectious before they realize it.That is not the usual for many other
upper respiratory conditions.
All of this suggests take a great deal of care in in-person events, and
personal exposure, even if it feels like 'the sniffles"
This is really a drag, because a lovely response to stress is to 'flock' - to
gather together in support.Perhaps we can expand our capacities to share
nervous systems over a distance in virtual space.....I know, it is not the
same..... Sad.....
