Please allow me to introduce myself; my name is Jo Bartlett, and I am a
Researcher for a British television company. We are making a documentary
about children from the Ukraine, Russia and the Baltic region, taken from
their parents by Nazi troops to live with German families in World War 2.
As you may know, many of these children went to Lebensborn homes first to
undergo 'Germanisation'. At the end of the war, UNRRA (the United Nations
Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) traced many of these children and
housed them in re-settlement camps in Germany while they tried to locate
their original families.
What is less well-known is that most of the children stolen by the Nazis
from Russia, the Hungarian Ukraine and the Baltic border regions were
prevented by a US government decision from returning to their original birth
families because of Cold War politics. Instead, they were resettled in new
homes in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA between approximately
1946 and 1948.
We are searching for any of these individuals, who would now be in their
sixties, for a documentary film.
Do you know of any groups or societies set up specifically for those
children who were never returned to their home country as a result of this
action?
Do you know of anyone who is in this situation and searching for their
biological family, who might be willing to take part in this documentary?
Any help or information you could offer us would be gratefully received, and
you may be sure that anyone deciding to contact us would be treated with the
utmost sensitivity and tact.
