My heart wept and sang as I was touched by the energy of honesty and
caring, evoking hope from deep within. And yet, in order to evoke trust in
me, I need to hear a do-able way that this injustice will start to be
repaid. It is painful to have the heart open and ask for forgiveness without
the act of some sacrifice, some compensation that would be felt by the white
Australians as a real giving of importance. Then this speech can be taken
seriously and can form a basis of a new day and new way. Without that
inevitably we grow cynical of political speeches that move us for the sake
of manipulation of the masses, and miss the opportunity to do the something
truly grand: to guide us into a new space as a society.
