Oh I agree Mike.
An interesting thing to notice too is that many of them close their eyes and adjust by ear. I guess that's not surprising at all really.

Well, the big mastering places are still in business, definitely.
What do they have that we don't?
A room built from the ground up for only that one purpose, mastering.
Very impressive full-range monitors set up perfectly in that room.
An engineer with years of experience and the ears of a bat.
And probably many thousands of dollars worth of outboard gear.

Can we get close in an acoustically treated room, with great ears, some experience, and some great plug-ins? Probably yes. Whether the plug-ins match the expensive hardware in terms of results is one of those debates that never ends, like analog versus digital.

Anyway, it's not about the gear so much. If you pay huge bucks to have a top guy master your album, you're paying for that engineer and his skills, taste, experience.
