DPC stands for deferred procedure calls, it is how Windows handles interrupts
and calls to the kernel and driver subsystem. Since Windows is not a real time
OS, it has to schedule these calls to handle access to resources. Having a high
latency between calls for the audio driver will result in dropped packets or
extra buffering by the drivers into memory, resulting in pops and crackles and
eventually drop outs.
It's more complex than that, but I'm just giving you the simple basic
definition.
You may have a tool called DPC latency checker on your DAW, or you can
google/download it. It will allow you to check your system's current DPC
latency. FYI, this tool is not accessible with JAWS, you'll have to use the
JAWS cursor to read its output, or have a sighted person do it for you.

OK. You may be experiencing hardware issues, or your NVRAM was reset and your
firmware settings lost, thus you machine could be experiencing high DPC
latency. Can you check your current DPC latency?

It started happening in 2015, the moment I started updating Windows! Until that
day, I was able to record flawlessly with any devices I have. Which is why I'm
now going to run Windows without updates, since updating just messes everything
up and breaks compatibility with JAWS.

If by DAW you mean my computer, I've had it since September 2, 2011. The
graphics card I have is the AMD ATI Radeon HD5400 series, though I'm not sure
of the exact model. I also have the Intel HD Graphics 3000. One of those two is
my graphics card, and the other is my video card, which I think also has audio
features. I also have the Realtek High Definition Audio soundcard built in to
the machine.

Hi, it's Annabelle.
When I'm either recording or playing audio within Sonar, JAWS sometimes seems
to fall asleep. Could it be that focus is lost? Why is the Focus Loss
Announcement turned off by default? How do I prevent this from happening? Also,
what can I do to prevent dropouts and stuttering, clicks and pops when
recording from my computer's internal soundcard into the MOTU 896HD?
