Annabelle,

I would expect there to be a difference, even if subtle. The lap steel guitar
(also known as a dobro because of the manufacturer) is an acoustic instrument
made mostly of wood with a large round metal resonator (sometimes called a
hubcap) where the sound hold is usually located.

A pedal steel guitar is mounted on a stand so that the player sits at it like a
piano, with a physical foot pedal to control the dampening of the strings, and
I believe a lot less acoustic wood to flavor the tone.

Hi, it's Annabelle.
I wonder, is there a difference in tone between the lap steel guitar and the
pedal steel guitar? Or do they sound the same? I'm confused! I know they both
have that sliding twang, and I know they're both used in country music and, if
I'm right, blues, but is there a characteristic tone that lets you tell them
apart? Maybe someone could share an audio example.
