I can say that I did my first few jobs for clients, mixing mastering and
everything, using sonar3 and later sonar4. Later I was able to get sonar8
and that was it. You can do it, it's not about having the latest and
greatest, but knowing how to use what you got. You might need to get a few
plugins to help here and there, or a program like sound forge if you are
planning to master, but not necessary if you just want to work.
Regarding editing, some things can be done using filters, though I
personally prefer going through event by event on the passages/tracks that I
really feel need to be precise. A sacrafise worth making for great sound.
Sometimes filters set you back more than they help, so use them sparingly.
To turn midi in to audio, it all depends what sounds you are after,
(natural/acoostic, or electronic), and what hardware and software modules
you have available. TO help more specificly I would need way more info, as
well as trying to find out what sound you want to present in your project.
If you need further assistance, feel free to ask on list or email me
off-list.

Subject: [ddots-l] Help Needed

Hi all!

I haven't been watching this list for a long time, as I've not been having
too much trouble working on my midi project. But now that I've basically
recorded all the midi files for my first album, I need to know what to do
next. So I have some questions:

1. Is it possible to make improvements across the board, like cleaning out
any unwanted events, making sure notes are activated and sustain just right,
or do I have to go through the file and make changes more meticulously when
filtering?

2. Has there yet been a tutorial made that walks you through creating a
project, from start to finish, so that I can learn how to put the finishing
touches in midi, and to convert from midi to audio? If not, can anyone
direct me to other resources, or give me individual help, Please?

3. I haven't been upgrading the programs from Sonar 4 Producer Edition,
CakeTalking 4, and Jaws 6.1, because I want to make a profit first. Do I
really need to upgrade in order to learn the rest of the process?

Any input would be much appreciated.

thanks!

Sharon
