Hi Jim,

If your tracks are straight forward so that you hear things clearly enough, you shouldn't have a problem. I produce tracks for a duo in Florida; I include a click track consisting of a couple of measures at the beginning of the song so as to give them a solid tempo before the performance starts. After that, it's pretty much up to your live musicians to be mindful of the tempo so you don't drift from it. Perhaps some rehearsal time might be needed to tighten things up so you'll know it cold and can do your shows "in your sleep" as it were. I do tracks for myself as well, and I know my arrangements cold, so it's become second nature to me.

I've heard of instances where the drummer wears headphones with a click track, especially when you're dealing with more complex arrangements that have tempo changes throughout the piece. I have tracks where the tempo slows down or becomes more free at the end of the song, but again, I've been through it enough times that I just know how to feel it and git-er-done.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Subject: [ddots-l] Live gigs

It's a drummer and myself on keys, I have a four channel mixer my keyboard, a mic, his drums, and for now my keyboard amp. I want to sequence some tracks and play them back with an MP3 player and play along with it but I'm concerned about timing issues during a live performance. Any suggestions?
