Hi Anabelle
Greetings to you DJX,
Before answering to your message below, I would like to tell you that I
recently stopped to use my DAW (thus, my computer on which SONAR is) since last
Tuesday, because due to unexpected errors on my Lenovo laptop working under
WINDOWS 7 64-bits and JAWS 13, it seems that the audio driver of my DAW, the
Yamaha USB Steinberg, may have disappeared. Each time I load SONAR, even when
the interface is switched on and connected to its USB cable, my laptop cannot
find its driver anymore; an error message appears, telling me that it is
assigned now to a silent bus, just like when the interface is off and
disconnected. Thus, I cannot use SONAR that I certainly need
I had tried to go to the audio options but found no audio output,
unfortunately; then, I pressed ctrl+tab to reach the driver's tab, but I could
not find any driver. C'est la vie, unfortunately.
Also, years earlier, I sometimes had audio dropped out when I used an older
interface that worked with FireWire (Presonus), and my laptop suddenly had
freezed after closing the file even without saving it. So I turned it on, SONAR
opened like normally, as long as the firewire was correctly connected to the
DAW. No audio playback was possible until going to the option and choosing the
appropriate available audio output. Sometimes, I had to look for the
interface's name in the driver's tab; then I turned off SONAR to reload it and
mission accomplished. And voilà, that worked the way it should. that been said,
my laptop does no longer find the audio driver for my Yamaha USB interface
since Tuesday. could you or somebody else PLEASE tell me how to recover what I
have lost even without using a CD to reinstall the driver? In oter words, I
need to use SONAR again.
Concerning you, you mean that JAWS' speech comes from it and you would like to
record without disturbing it, unless you select an area in which the sound may
come, especially in an audio track. But in a MIDI track, only the synths' sound
may be played.
Thank you.

The main reason why I have JAWS running through my MOTU is because I don't want
to have the voice come through when I'm recording from my built-in soundcard.

You really should have JAWS running through your built-in sound card, not
through the audio interface. Most JAWS synths run at a low sample rate of 22KHZ
or 32KHZ if you're lucky, and the drivers sometimes get locked up trying to
work things about on multiple sample rates with different streams. Some drivers
are good at upscaling and dealing with it that way, others not so much.

What about the problem of JAWS suddenly dropping out and freezing during
recording or playback? How do I fix that? I have JAWS running through the
headphones in my MOTU.

DPC stands for deferred procedure calls, it is how Windows handles interrupts
and calls to the kernel and driver subsystem. Since Windows is not a real time
OS, it has to schedule these calls to handle access to resources. Having a high
latency between calls for the audio driver will result in dropped packets or
extra buffering by the drivers into memory, resulting in pops and crackles and
eventually drop outs.
It's more complex than that, but I'm just giving you the simple basic
definition.
You may have a tool called DPC latency checker on your DAW, or you can
google/download it. It will allow you to check your system's current DPC
latency. FYI, this tool is not accessible with JAWS, you'll have to use the
JAWS cursor to read its output, or have a sighted person do it for you.

What is DPC latency and how do I check it?

OK. You may be experiencing hardware issues, or your NVRAM was reset and your
firmware settings lost, thus you machine could be experiencing high DPC
latency. Can you check your current DPC latency?

Yes, via a factory image that was custom built for me when I purchased the
machine.

No offense, but did you do it properly? As in did you set everything up for daw
use?

You probably need Windows reinstalled

It started happening in 2015, the moment I started updating Windows! Until that
day, I was able to record flawlessly with any devices I have. Which is why I'm
now going to run Windows without updates, since updating just messes everything
up and breaks compatibility with JAWS.

Have you always been able to record like this? Did this start happening
recently? Or has it been doing this for a while?

If by DAW you mean my computer, I've had it since September 2, 2011. The
graphics card I have is the AMD ATI Radeon HD5400 series, though I'm not sure
of the exact model. I also have the Intel HD Graphics 3000. One of those two is
my graphics card, and the other is my video card, which I think also has audio
features. I also have the Realtek High Definition Audio soundcard built in to
the machine.

Hi, it's Annabelle.
When I'm either recording or playing audio within Sonar, JAWS sometimes seems
to fall asleep. Could it be that focus is lost? Why is the Focus Loss
Announcement turned off by default? How do I prevent this from happening? Also,
what can I do to prevent dropouts and stuttering, clicks and pops when
recording from my computer's internal soundcard into the MOTU 896HD?
