Would only a multy band compressor work in this kind of situation or would
the other compressors work as well. If so how would you determine the
frequencies to compress when there is no frequency slider in the other
compressors.

Check out Compression, specifically, compressing the high end 
frequencies where sibilant sounds like S's are found.
That will take some experimenting with the various compressor settings.
