For me it also depends on what style of music. Many times when doing say
latin genre music, I do the percussion tracks and perhaps bass before
anything, as those tracks are what drives the music and also is not a
verrying as drums can be on other styles... In creating hip
hop/techno/rap/reggaeton or any kind of loop based music, the drums come
first sometimes, sometimes not, sometimes I record the synth leads or the
synth arpegios/chords, or something similar. The bass is one of the last I
do in these styles... For other syltes it dpeneds, sometimes for rock I'll
lay down the chords with the guitar or keyboard, or with strings etc. But
generally, whenever I get an idea, whatever it is that I hear, I put it into
a project scratch pad type of thing no matter what, whether it is a drum
track, a bassline, a synth lead, arpeggiator, section, melody line, etc.
Then you can hear it later and see what else you can add to it and go that
way... Sometimes you can't expect to complete an entire song in 1 sitting;
unless you really have to, I'd say let it sit in your brain for a while so
you can see what different ways you can approach the song... Just record
what your current idea is for the song so that you don't forget.

Hi folks.

i'd be interested to hear your workflow methods from the start of the
project through to final mix down.

Let's say for example you've been tinkering about with a few chords on the
keyboard or guitar and have a melody in mind.

How do you personally get that recorded?

Do you start with a drum loop to set the mood?

do you start with the basic keys track?

The taking it past an idea is the one I always struggle with as I never
quite know where to start from.

I tend to find myself putting down a drum loop first, but then that dictates
the mood of the production.

Do you have to hear a track clearly in your head before you can start
recording?

Thanks in advance for sharing your own experiences.

Cheers
Darren
