Well, some synths seem to provide it as part of their communication with the
host application (e.g. Pentagon I), but others don't.  In some cases, like
sample players, the patch list depends on what libraries are loaded, so
there'd be no such thing as a static definition anyway.   

I suspect that the synths that do provide a list are taking advantage of a
programming interface within the VST and/or DXI standards, but I've not read
the specification documents to know for sure.

yeah, I kinda see what you're saying, although I'm not music tech enough to
fully understand.  I guess it's a bit like trying to track a non-static IP
address?

OK, sow with the soft synths like Pro53, FM7 etc, where you can use the
patch/bank select, where is the instrument list drawn from?
