After a lot of tooing and froing I reinstalled CT 8.8 but I'm still getting the 
message "this is not an authorised version of CakeTalking so you won't be able 
to work in Sonar, etc"

I'm running jaws v16 and I'm on a windows7 pc.

I'm getting absolutely nowhere.  I've tried earlier versions of jaws 
and I'm still being told that I don't own a valid CT licence.

I'm at my wit's end and I'm thinking of abandoning my project and 
uninstalling both Sonar and CT.
I might use my pc as a foot stool.
