Hi Ivan,

Your analysis of Nero is brilliant, below is the Guardian's (a UK upper class Newspaper) review.

Nero's music really does what it says on the tin. Dan Stephens and Joe Ray have been praised for merging drum'n'bass and dubstep with elements of 90s house and trance, genres that might strike you as irreconcilable. And then you hear the euphoric synth stabs and soaring diva vocals, the grinding beats and wobbly, super-distorted basslines and you realise that's exactly what they're doing. But it makes sense: now in their mid-20s, Stephens and Ray began making drum'n'bass in the mid-noughties before pursuing a more dubstep direction, with feted remixes of the Streets, La Roux, N*E*R*D and Beyoncé. Now they're combining elements of the two dance genres they know best.

Their new single, Me and You, starts like an obscure 80s synth track before becoming a sort of metallic rock-disco. Previous single Innocence is precisely what happens when you ally rave anthemics with the diva vocals of a 90s hit by Bizarre Inc or K Klass, plus the floor-shuddering bassquake of dubstep. The production is bold and bleepy and the bit in the middle where everything except the keyboards stop (is that a "drop"? We haven't been to a club since the days when Jimmy Saville invented "decknology"), before the bludgeoning bass comes bursting back in, is supremely arresting.

Electron comprises icy electronics plus cut-up soul diva vocals and a super-fast skittering drum'n'bass rhythm while Do You Wanna is weird, like sped-up OutKast swing R&B played by hyped-up robots. Early club hit This Way featuring the vocals of one Alana is dub'n'bass/ravestep. Act Like You Know is interesting: Nero have issued two versions of it, dubstep and drum'n'bass, but the one we've heard features elements of both so it's not exactly a fusion – more like a frictional alliance of previously hostile opposites. You can see why electronic dance/soundtrack mavens Chase & Status have signed them: Act ... would have worked superbly in that Michael Caine thriller where he tortures Plan B. A pleasurable pain on the ears.

Subject: [ddots-l] Thanks and more about Dubstep

Hi Steve,

I liked the Dubstep music you recommended and never herd of Nero.

I like different genres like drum&Bass,, Electronica, poprock, Spanish
Rock among others.

I have also actually dabbled a little with remixing in the Dubstep
stile.

However, I don’t think I completely understand what makes Dubstep,
Dubstep.

I thought what made Dubstep was its distinctive wawa bass lines; by the
way some producers can get pretty crazy with their Wawa bases!

The link you emailed sounds more like a modern style of rock, though I
could hear the Wawa bass at some points in the Nero song. The producer
in this music did not get too crasy with the Wawa bass.

I have also worked on yours and everybodies panning suggestions and I
feel I am arriving to something I can be good with.

I am also presently working on a club remix of the same Kascade and Adam
K song I emailed to this list ; and I am also thinking of making a
Dubstep version, though I have not started this remix.

Thanks and cheers!

Ivan

Ivan,

you've done a great job with this song.
It's a strange arena you put yourself in when asking other producers to
judge your song as everyone will have there personal choices. If this track
had been on a compilation CD I would have listened to it without the
critical ear and enjoyed it for what it is, (a great song that has a
Fantastic hook)

If we take the Michael Jackson song Billie Jean, I always thought the bass
synth was too quiet, one day I was at a venue where there was a Michael
Jackson tribute performer. His Billie Jean backing track had a bass synth
that was the same as the record but more noticeable in the mix, the track
didn't sound right at all.

What I'm clumsily trying to say is, don't lose your ideas, just take little notes from the suggestions we give on this list and add some of them to your
original ideas.

Thanks for your feedback all,

I wanted to ask you a question regarding the technical aspects and
regarding the panning of each track:

I worked the panning as best as possible, given that this is left to
ones criteria and I don’t know how good are my criteria at this point.

To tell you the truth I don’t feel that good about how I panned the
tracks because I felt like I did not know what exactly I was doing.

If you had the below track content, how would you theoretically pan the
tracks?

Vocals: is there an ideal for panning vocals (Omar and Daren)? Left?
Right? Center?

Beginning pad: Omar I don’t know how to change from mono to stereo, if
it is not too much to ask, can you direct me to the manual or let me
know if it is not too much trouble?

Drums: should all the percussion in a drum set be panned to the same
side. Kick, snare, high hats, etc, left right center??

Electric bass: where should an electric bass is ideally placed in the
arrangement, given the panning of vocals, drums, keys etc)

Piano:

Strings:

Distorted guitar lead:

All feedback is well apriciated!

Ivan
