  Hi,

No, not at all. You don't need a Motif or any other hosting device as the
boards fit inside the PlugStation - it'll take up to 4 of them (this would
be pointless for the XG board and you can only use the VH vocal board if
you've still got an old Yamaha SW1000XG sound card kicking around and can
find the Kenton daughter board for it). Given those two special cases, you
just use the PlugStation like a 1U rack synth module, which is what it is.
If you can find one, make sure it comes with a Y-board expansion card fitted
(this gives you 8 analog outputs, 2 per card). Without the Y board fitted
you'll only get audio out of the unit via its ADAT connector.

  Best wishes.

  Tim,

Once you run the boards through the station, does the station then get
connected to the motif? I've never heard of this method, which is why i'm
asking. Also, when you run the boards through the kenton, do they still use
up a midi channel from the motif?

  Hi,

I run my Plg boards inside a Kenton PlugStation. Unfortunately,
  these are
no longer in production, but they're a great way of getting to grips
  with
these boards. They also make them sound better as Yamaha skimped on
  the
hosting synth side of things - the boards will run 24-bit, but the
  Yamaha
synths only allow them to run in 16-bit mode. The PlugStation
  allows full
24-bit usage and they sound great.

They're still a pig to program, though (grin).

  Best wishes.

Bryan, after having a vl plg board, I'd definitely agree with what
  you're
saying. Although the vl board sounds awesome, i really find the fact
  that it
takes up an entire midi channel for it extremely problematic.
  Roland's srx
expansion cards, for example, don't interact with the synth that way
  at all.

You don't really want them. They don't add other sounds to the
Motif. They're basically like self-contained synths. It is like you
  just put
another synthesizer in the Motif and hard wired their outputs
  together. The
FM and analog boards only can be used for 1 sound each at a time,
  and they
don't show up on the first 16 channels that the internal sequencer
  can
access. The XG board can do 16 channels at once, but it, also, is
  like a
separate synth. It can't use any of the Motif's effects (except the
  master
effect). It is also hard to access from the internal sequencer.

That stuff isn't worth your time unless you just really enjoy a
technical struggle. That's mostly why they were dropped in the XS.
  Difficult
to use, and they don't integrate well with the Motif.

The best thing is to keep an eye out on ebay for that obsolete
stuff. Also, Guitar Center has a used section on their website where
  they
  get things randomly.

not that i'm aware of. I suppose motifator.com would have them if
there are any. Also, wasn't there a plg board for the es that
  contained
  orchestral sounds?

Are there any string libraries for the motif es? Cuz the factory

The only thing I do with it is use the sounds. You don't have access
to any parameters, and even for sounds, you need sighted help to
  copy the
presets into sonar and save them. Otherwise, you can't access them.
  I feel
that unless you use a synth like Vienna, hardware boards are still
  the best
sounding for strings, brasses, and woodwinds. I know that's not what
  we'd
like to acknowledge, and I know that we'd all like to get into as
  much
softsynths as possible, but honestly, I haven't heard anything
  satisfactory
in the realm of virtual that can match a hardware synth like the
  motif or a
roland synth for the instruments I mentioned above, except for the
  Vienna
  stuff.

definitely not a loser. it's great.

  Bryan,

I personally wouldn't recommend either atmosphere or omnisphere for
great, natural-sounding, woodwind, string, brass, or other natural
instruments. I would label them as average at best. Just my opinion,
  though.
A better synth for that kind of stuff is EastWest's colossis. The
  only
drawback to that is that you need sighted help to copy and paste the
  presets
into sonar. Otherwise, it isn't accessible.

All of you people using Omnisphere, what is your opinion of the
sound quality in terms of bread and butter sounds? All of the demos
  that
I've found are full of amazingly pulsing, throbbing, morphing,
  arpeggiating,
swirling textures and synth tambers. That sounds great for creating
atmospherics, or for scoring television action shows. However, how
  well does
Omnisphere serve as a general purpose go-to instrument? For example,
  I have
lots of plugs if I want drums, pianos, electric pianos, guitars, and
  synths.
However, when the odd situation comes up, and I need a sax, a
  ukulele, a
harpsichord, or a sitar, I need a general purpose synth to go to.
  I've used
various things for that over the years, but I'm now in a spot where
  the old
stuff like Hypersonic isn't available anymore on Win 7, and I'm
  trying not
to use hardware synths anymore, so can't just track in something
  from one of
  those.

So, how do you rate it for general purpose sounds?

  Bryan
