Dear Audrey,

Scrubbing is the function of moving throughout audio by manually moving the two reels of tape on an old multi track tape machine by disengaging the transport motor. This renders the two reels of tape free; to be moved with your hands. There was a lever that would allow the tape to be move closer to the play head of the reel-to-reel allowing for the engineer to be able to hear at what point he or she was at in the program material. Then, they would cut and splice intire sections of the song from one place to another , rearranging the structure of a recorded song.

In the digital realm, we can do this track by track rather then just the whole program material. This is usually done with a mouse or scrub wheel which is found on external controllers.

Take Care,

Sean

Hi all,

Thanks, Patrick! You read my thoughts. I've been a musician all my life but I am just now getting into this "midi stuff."

What is the definition of "scrubbing"?

Take care.
Audrey
