The Cakewalk Tape Sims isn't bad at all and does add nice warmth to a mix.

First of all, it's sim not sem, sim as in simulation.

Have you looked for any help included with the plug-in?

Although useful, it is getting old. If you want to hear some really good
tape simulation, check out the StuderR A800 Multichannel Tape Recorder
Plug-In from Universal Audio. Although it requires their UAD hardware to
run, it's currently the most accurate emulation of old tape gear.
