for example, a google search turned up this article from Sound on Sound magazine. That's another good place to search, as is EQ magazine, Mix online, etc.
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul01/articles/equalisers1.asp

There are also courses available online, through Berkleemusic and other places, then there are various recording related blogs and podcasts.

Hi Chris, ok I understand what E-Q bands are and that the sonitus
equalizer has 6 bands that control different frequencys. I know with
an E-Q you can cut or boost certain frequencies, and I know a filter
is used only to cut out certain frequencies below a given point but it
does it gradually depending on the slope selected. But what I am
confused about is that each band in the sonitus plug in seems to have
a filter type associated with it. For example the first band has a
filter type of shelving low, and the others have filter types of
peak/dip and shelving high. I also see high pass and low pass here as
well and I understand what these two do but I don't understand the
shelving low and shelving high. Any help? Hope this is not to
confusing haha.
