Len, the better mastering guys use careful subtle EQ, compression, and then some limiting. I mention that because there is a trend with the amateurs to just stick a limiter on and crank it up to absurd levels, which always produces unwanted artifacts like distortion, weakened transients, or messes with the balance of the mix.
If the mix is already loud and controlled, it shouldn't need more than a few dB of limiting.
If I had to list my three favorites they would be:Slate Digital FG-X (also includes a very transparent compressor section)
Voxengo ElephantSonnox Oxford Limiter (be careful this one sometimes narrows the stereo image if pushed too far)
There's a great limiter included in Ozone 5 Advanced, but that is quite an expensive suite of plug-ins.
Any of the limiter plug-ins out there will work better on some kinds of material and not so well on others. So you will probably be trying different ones on each project, to determine which one best suits the material.
