When you're importing a file in to a matrix cell, and you're in the open file dialog, you can press the play button (short is alt+p), to preview the currently highlighted sample/loop. If you have a control surface, reach over and hit the play button. With your track playing, samples that you preview will automatically sync to the project tempo, so you can hear how they'd fit in to your project before loading them on to a Matrix cell.
