R&B and hip hop are what ever you make them. As music, both are very simple.
What is complicated about them is the sound design. The particular sounds that
people like change all of the time, as these styles are extremely fad/trend
driven.

Right now, what is trendy is synth-driven stuff that is more like Euro dance
styles than they have ever been before.

For drums, you want short percussive drums, including stacking acoustic and
electronic drums. Of course TR808 drums have been popular for a while. You can
get most of these drum sounds from the Roland GrooveSynth. You'll need to
compress them, though, in order for them to sound right. If you want to layer
them with acoustic, you have lots of options either with Session Drummer or the
stock stuff in Dimension. Those aren't the best acoustic kits, but they don't
need to be for this kind of music. The character of the sound is all you want.

All of the main harmonic and melodic parts are synths. For arpeggios, use Z3ta.
For pads and stabs, use either Z3ta, or Pentagon.

You might want to track down your own one-shot sound effects to use for
layering, and learn how to trigger them with the Matrix view.

You can also get way more arpeggio sounds by using the track view's arpeggiator
to trigger any synth sound with an arp pattern.

That's it, though. That's everything you need for modern R&B, hip hop, and a
lot of synth-driven top 40.

If it doesn't sound as big or powerful to you as what you hear on albums and
the radio, then that is because you don't know how to mix it right. Get
familiar with how to properly balance levels, how to use EQs to mix (not just
for effect), and how to use simple and multi-band compressors to pump up the
sound.

Subject: [ddots-l] new sounds

Hello all, I' looking for some soft synths to exspand my sound a little.
I'm looking for some synths that are good for R&B and hip hop at this time.
Can some one tell me of some good excesible synths? I just don't really have a
good idea about what we can or can not use. I thank you all very much.
