Was your tempo change done in MIDI before exporting to audio?

The last couple times I used the tempo change to slow a song down at the
end, I was unable to export it as a wave file, it got to 90 percent, then
encountered an error. I deleted the tempo change and the problem with
exporting went away, but my nice slow down went with it. Can anyone tell me
what could be causing this?
