Have either of you looked at the Windows Event Logs to see what, if
anything, gets reported there?

These logs can be very technical, but they have often put me on the
right track, though usually after an intensive Google.

Another area, albeit a little more technical, is to instigate
something called Process Monitor.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx   This
records a vary variety of actions your system is performing.  The logs
can be huge, and do take some wading through, but my own experiences
have more often than not been able to pinpoint at least where the
problem lies.  After than, I pass to the developer and let him/her do
the rest.
