Will you be having this surgery? If so I'm sorry to hear that you are
already in my thoughts and prayers.

May the peace of God which passes all understanding gard your heart and
mind in Christ Jesus.

God bless you!

Subject: [ddots-l] stapedectomy

Good evening everyone,

First let me apologies for the somewhat off-topic nature of this
message. I am desperate to find individuals who are musicians or that do
digital-audio production who have undergone a stapedectomy to improve their
hearing. This surgery is commonly performed on patients with otosclerosis.
Otosclerosis is a condition in which spongy tissue forms on the bones of the

middle ear. The stapes or stirrup is usually effected. These deposits
eventually prevent the stapes from conducting sound waves resulting in
eventual hearing loss.

A stapedectomy is a procedure in which the natural stapes is removed and

replaced with a prosthetic one. All of the literature I've read indicates
that 80 to 90% of patients that undergo this procedure have improved
hearing. This information also indicates that the sound one hears is natural

despite the implantation of a prosthetic stapes. If you're a musician or one

who does lots of digital sound production and manipulation you need to hear
things as they should sound, not as they shouldn't. Since most of you on
this list are involved with music and sound production I thought it an
appropriate place to find someone who may have undergone this operation and
can tell me what their hearing was like before and after the procedure. In
other words will having the surgery cause harm, or can it help those
employed in such fields. If I knew of big-name entertainers whose music I
hear or whose documentaries I watch had this surgery and who do not
experience hearing difficulties following the surgery that would be plenty
of reassurance that things could turn out okay for me and I can still "Trust

my ears" when it comes to digital-audio production.

Again sorry for the somewhat off-topic message. Any cautions or
encouragement you can give me will be very much appreciated.
