Yea, you would just send the instrument/synth to a certain outputs separate
from the main mix, feed that output into your compressor/effects unit, then
take the return of the unit and feed into one of your inputs...

Subject: [ddots-l] virtual instruments with external compressors

  Hello,

I'm currently using an RME fireface as my audio interface with sonar, and am
not using any other external mixing board. So, everything is running thorugh
the Fireface. Is it possible to set up an external preamp/compressor through
the fireface where any virtual instruments I use in sonar, (Drums from sfz for
example,) could run through the external compressor, or are external
compressors limited to hardware synths?

  Thanks.
