I agree with Sharon. I work for a vocational rehab agency for the blind and even though we have about three hundred staff computers loaded with Duxbury, and I provide hundreds of hours yearly of education on producing braille documents for our consumers, I still have staff expecting to be able to get a complicated table document embossed in an hour or so. Unless you've actually had experience working with braille production, you can't even begin to imagine the idiosyncrasies of the process. I know, I'm preaching to the choir. -----Original Message----- From: duxuser-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:duxuser-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Sharon Hilton Sent: Monday, September 11, 2006 10:42 AM To: duxuser@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [duxuser] Re: Article on Braille transcription focuses on NBPtranscriber and Duxbury Systems This is a fairly well written article with good explanations, but, I feel the author went wrong with the comment "Cronin takes text entered on her computer, types in a command, and watches it instantly morph on the screen into Braille code." This makes it sound like no skills or training is involved! How will we ever get the lay person to recognize braille transcribing as a true profession as long as they think there is no brain matter involved? Rarely does a short article explain braille transcription issues so well. <http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/09/10/lost_in_translatio ns/>http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/09/10/lost_in_transla tions/ By the way, I have checked Joe Sullivan's resume, and have confirmed that he has in fact never attended Hogwarts. -- David Holladay * * * * This message is via list duxuser at freelists.org. * To unsubscribe, send a blank message with * unsubscribe * as the subject to <duxuser-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>.
