[duxuser] Re: Duxbury ignoring carriage returns

It depends on what you are trying to do. Are you trying to emboss a Braille
document just as it is, without the embosser getting into the act at all? When
you say Duxbury isn't honoring marriage returns, do you mean that you have the
document just the way you want it and Duxbury is messing with it?

The way a document shows up on your Braille display isn't always a good
indicator of how it will emboss. You can see your codes, but you don't always
get a line for line display of your file on the display.

In general terms, I find it works best if you let the embosser just be "dumb"
and let Duxbury do the work of formatting. If your document is already set up
the way you want it in Braille, why not save it as a .brf file, which can be
sent to the embosser just as is? Does this make sense? I am guessing that you
problem may be that the settings you have in Duxbury don't match the line and
page lengths in your document. I'd have to see the document and know what
program produced it, though. Maybe someone else has ideas.

Hi Susie. Would the soft return, when you hit enter on the PC be
considered a carriage return or a line feed? In the document menu,
embosser setup, advanced options, there is a setting for end of line
indicator and I have it set to carriage return, line feed (PC) Is this
setting correct or should I change it?

Just pressing Enter on the PC is a soft return; that's what makes the
less than sign in Duxbury when you have the codes revealed. A hard
return is when you really do want to go to a new line; the code for that
is CTRL-L. The old WordPerfect codes called it HRT. It forces a new
line.

Can you tell me the difference between soft and hard returns? For
example, if you hit if you hit enter on your PC to go to a new line, is
that a hard return?

Hi Leslie,

Pound to a bad penny you have a file which has hard returns
at the end of each line, as opposed to soft returns.

You will see this if you view Codes in the .DXP file, where
there will probably be an [l] code at the end of each line.

The quick way to resolve this is to highlight each
paragraph, and from DBT's document menu, select "Join
Lines".

Hello all. I am a Duxbury 10.5 user and am new to the list.
I'm trying to print out a document and the carriage returns
are being ignored. The document looks fine on my braille
display but when I print it out, the carriage returns are
being ignored. In other words, there are line breaks in
awkward places and all the braille seems to be crammed opnto
1 page. I've also noticed there are about 10 lines left,
which shouldn't be the case either. My parameters are 26
lines/page, 41 characters/line. Does anyone have any
recommendations? Thank you.
Sincerely:
Leslie Kouzes
