I've used Microsoft Word to import documents to Duxbury for braille transcription, but as noted below, Word is no longer opperating on my system, and an alternate called Open Office Writer is not as cooperative with my screenreader. I sent this to the Freedom Scientific support team for their input, and thought you might have some suggestions also. Thanks.

Subject: Microsoft Word no longer available, and Open Office Writer not as friendly with Jaws

For your information, I no longer have Microsoft Word working on my system, so it's too late to try out your suggestions. The other night I installed something called Ninite Net to update various applications, and when I tried opening a Word document from the My Documents folder yesterday morning, I was promted to enter an activation key for Word 2007, which obviously was already installed but I wasn't using; I was using 2003, professional edition. We tried deleting 2007 with Add/Remove Programs, but 2003 went away with it; when we tried reinstalling Word 2003 we were told the file couldn't be found. We contacted Microsoft and, after discussing finding the CD from which I had installed Word 2003, found out they no longer carry a replacement of the Microsoft Word product, and besides, it wasn't free. Yesterday we downloaded Open Office, which we discovered was free, but didn't find it as accessible with Jaws as Word. For instance, some of the special control characters don't work in Find/Replace, such as caret p for paragraph mark, caret l for line, caret t for tab, etc., which were accessible in Word. This makes it a lot harder to edit and iron out unwanted blanks in a document using Open Office Writer. When I go to the alt+h Help menu in Open Office and try to select and read the About dialog or any other Help window, I find the dialog or menu interwoven with the running text file I opened. This makes it harder to check which version of Open Office I'm running at the moment. Is there a way to recover the use of Microsoft Word on my computer with minimal expense, or can an alternate word processor be suggested that will have the special accessibility features Word did? Thanks for your continued help and support. Hear from you some time today or tomorrow.
