Hello all, especially good folks at DBT!
With all due respect, I'd like to suggest that the current DBT licensing scheme
needs a profound revision. It has been with us for many, many years; and it
just does not fit well with the current realities and expectations, especially
for a product as pricy as DBT. I mean, having to remember all of your activated
computers, or even having to contact Support whenever a hard drive fails or
whenever you just forget to remove an activation--that, to me, is a bit too
much.
I would respectfully suggest that another activation scheme be considered. For
example, something like online licensing, where the user would log in to a web
site to manage their own DBT activations. For some good examples, look at
products from Microsoft, Magix, Freedom Scientific, and many other companies.
For a specific use scenario: a user would just log into a licensing site and be
able to see and manage all activations with his or her serial numbers. This
would really make life quite a bit easier, should you require a reactivation.
Also, I understand this change requires a major investment. So, while this is
in process, could you please at least relax your activation policy just a bit?
For example, by stating that a licensed user has a right for one re-activation
per year, no questions asked. In practice, this would mean the following:
- I need a reactivation for whatever reason, and I am out of activations.
- I contact DBT Technical Support.
- They look at my account. And, if I have not reactivated for a year, they just
issue another activation, no questions asked.
I don't think this would contribute to piracy, because DBT users are a pretty
committed and honest group. But this would make life easier in case you are out
of activations.

That's most helpful. I had just upgraded two licences but I was unable to
deactivate the old licences so that must be what has happened. I'll email tech
support now and ask for them to deactive those those computers.

Duxbury license support has told me that one license allows installation on two
machines. I have been successful in doing that.
In your case, it may be that there is a second installation you have forgotten
about. Duxbury license support will be able to tell you how many installations
you have, and will actually be able to identify the computers for you. If you
desire, they can also deactivate one of the installations so you can install on
a different machine.
