Thanks for your help.
I did contact Enabling Technologies. I plugged the embosser back in to
follow their instructions and it started to work fine. Go figure.

I presume by "usual" you have included making sure that the data cable is securely in place?
Failing that, perhaps a telephone call initially to Enabling Technologies might proffer some other suggestions.
