My embosser is an Index Everest-D and I think I bought it in 1997. It cost
about $4,000.00. It's the only embosser I know which uses single-sheet
feed. I never liked tractor-fed paper.

Embossers like this one cost as much as notetakers and I don't use it as
much as I did before I bought my BrailleNote.

I believe embossers will take a back seat and the notetakers will come to
the fore because you can store so much braille in them. I can take several
translations of the Bible, a hymn book and several books for pleasure
reading with me.

: Hello Paul,
: I agree with you that embossers are not affordable for the average
: consumer. The least expensive model I know of is the FS Braille Blazer
: which works very nicely as a producer of cassette labels. I wouldn't
: want to depend on it for anything but the shortest of documents since it
: needs a rest after ten to 15 pages of embossing. And it costs over
: $1000.00 I'm afraid those wanting and needing Braille embossers are
: victims of a capitolist system that punishes small markets.
: I know that some public libraries in larger cities have Braille
: embossers that patrons can use. We have such a set up at the Boston
: Public Library.
: IT's either that option if it is available to you or start licking the
: boots of rich grantors.
: Well, time to pull myself up by the boot straps like a good American
: individualist. LOL>

: PS I used to think that one of the purposes of government was to
: mitigate against disadvantages such as disability. In the area of
: Braille, the government has much mitigating to do.

:
: Folks:
:
: About seven weeks ago, I solicited opinion on the most efficient
: medium-sized and affordable Braille embosser. In addition to the
: feedback that came my way from vendors (especially Sighted Electronics
: and their admirers), I contacted a national consumer organization in the
: United States that undertakes unbiased evaluation of assistive
: technology devices across the board.
:
: To ensure that I leave no stone unturned in acquiring all important
: data, I talked to select agencies that utilize different Braille
: embossers to meet education and rehabilitation needs of consumers.
:
: To cap it all, I have just returned from Power-Up 2006, a two-day
: assistive technology conference organized by Missouri Assistive
: Technology Council, during which vendors and other stakeholders staged a
: technology expo, among other activities.
:
: Bottom line: I truly believe that Braille embossers and supporting
: software are generally unaffordable for the average consumer. I hate to
: contemplate an era when state governments in the United States will
: cease to provide financial assistance to people who are blind to
: purchase these assistive devices. As I said to one vendor just
: yesterday, consumers may have to exercise their power through a boycott
: of these products, should such a situation arise!
:
:
: Sincerely,
